Overview & Objective
The primary objective of this project was to program an autonomous LEGO Mindstorms robot capable of reliably navigating its way through complex, unknown mazes. The development process bridged the gap between virtual testing and physical deployment, ensuring that behavioral algorithms developed and validated in a simulation environment translated seamlessly to real-world robotic hardware.
Software Architecture
The control architecture was built from the ground up utilizing strict Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles in Java.
- Modular Behaviors: Designed highly reusable and modular classes to separate navigation logic from raw sensor polling, allowing for cleaner code and easier debugging.
- Hardware Abstraction: Structured the codebase using Java interfaces and classes to abstract the low-level hardware. This enabled control algorithms to be seamlessly tested in a virtual simulator before deploying them directly to the physical robot.
Sensor Integration & Filtering
Reliable maze navigation relies entirely on accurate perception of the immediate environment. To achieve this, the system integrated multiple data streams while actively compensating for hardware noise.
- Obstacle Avoidance: Utilized forward-facing sensors to dynamically detect walls and prevent collisions, triggering immediate course-correction maneuvers.
- Color Detection: Integrated color sensors to recognize floor markings or specific visual cues indicating target zones or forbidden areas.
- Low-Pass Filtering: Engineered software-based low-pass filters to clean erratic sensor spikes, dramatically improving the navigational stability and driving smoothness of the physical robot.
